Millions of women around the world suffer from PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Yet, these symptoms are often created from an imbalance in honoring the sacred energetic feminine body, leading to fatigue, anxiety, depression, sadness, insomnia, and menstrual cramps. Like the moon, our menstrual cycle is a dance of our divine emptying and filling. But in our modern society, we have lost touch with honoring the flow of our inner goddess. In ancient nomadic societies, entire tribes would stop and set up camp when the women began their cycles (hence where cycle synching stems from). Young girls not yet of age and older women past menopause would tend to the needs of the menstruating women; bathing them in essential oils, bringing them water and nourishing foods, and tending to their every need as they rested, bled, and got in touch with their intuitive nature.
In our modern society, periods are thought to be a nuisance, with none or minimal education at home or in schools, teaching young girls that there are virtually no natural ways of honoring periods other then taking a Midal and using a synthetic tampon. As women, we are expected to get up, go to work or school and go about our daily schedule without stopping to honor the massive changes within our bodies; emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Holistic period cycles are emerging in great waves as the consciousness arises and we enter the age of Aquarius. Women are taking time to honor their cycles, through education, visibility, and even artist expression. Tell us any other living thing that bleeds for seven days and does not die…we didn't think so. Women are fierce, and extra fierce and sacred on our periods. So we’re sharing our favorite natural ways to heal, honor, and sooth PMS.
Using essentials oils:
Essential oils are perfect for massaging into the lower abdomen and lower back as well as swollen or tender breasts. Ingesting in water is always a great way to get the soothing benefits of essential oils (always use food grade oils when ingesting). Use in aromatherapy to create a relaxing and healing home environment.
Known for its deeply calming affects, Lavender oil is deeply healing for period cramps. When your uterus is trying to shed its inner lining, it contracts and expands to push old tissues out through your vagina. This can cause your uterus and the surrounding blood vessels to feel inflamed, and Lavender oil treats this by relaxing your muscles.
Rose oil, apart from smelling incredible, acts as a natural laxative (the hormone progesterone is the main culprit here) to containing emmenagogues (a substance that triggers menstruation, which is great if your periods are irregular). Rose essential oil can also help treat cramps, fatigue, and nausea, making it a menstruation must-have.
Clove oil can help to shorten the duration of your period and stop excessive bleeding, known as menorrhagia, and even helps to lower high blood pressure.
If you’re stressed during your period, this one’s for you. Ylang-ylang oil soothes the brain and central nervous system, making it easier to cope with stress period induced anxiety and depression.
Peppermint oil is amazing for relieving headaches and inflammation and boost energy. Fluctuating estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can leave you feeling fatigued at different points of your menstrual cycle, and peppermint oil can help energize the blood and nervous system.
Moonstone: Known as the Goddess stone, Moonstone helps to honor the ebb and flow of women’s natural flow of divine goddess energy. Just as the moon grows and contracts, our cycle is as magical and magnetic as the moon.
Chrysocolla: A deeply healing stone, Chrysocolla slows down and relaxes the immune system, aiding in regulating the blood flow and bringing balance back to the body.
Rose Quartz: Let the pale pink color of Rose Quartz calm your emotions, leaving space and energy to create from your heart space, while tapping into our own inner healer. Rose Quartz calls for more self love, which can feel alien to us during our menstruation. It allows for space to embrace our natural female heightened intuitions and energies.
Acupuncture and Reiki are powerful natural healing practices when it comes to hormonal imbalances. Because PMS is triggered by a set of hormonal changes in the body which creates energetic imbalances, known in Eastern Medicine as “liver qi congestions”. This means that the life giving energy (qi) free flow in the body is blocked or compromised. This is the cause of tension headaches, extreme fatigue, insomnia, depression, tearfulness, anxiety, and body aches. Acupuncture and reiki, as energy practices, help to balance the energy, balancing female hormones and relieving stress from the nervous system.
